About Your Instructor

From “I can’t equalize” to competitive freediver

Hi, I’m Walaipun, a Molchanovs Wave 3 Instructor and competitive freediving athlete based in Bali.

I did not come from a swimming background, and I am not the tallest person in the water. My journey is proof that freediving is not only for people who grew up swimming or who seem naturally built for depth. With the right technique, patient training, and trust in the process, we can go much further than we first believe.

My freediving story began in late 2018. I saw a photo of someone swimming with humpback whales in long fins, and something inside me immediately said: I want to do that one day.

At the time, I had injured my lower back from carrying scuba tanks, so freediving felt like a new way to return to the ocean. I started learning, fell in love with the sport, and have been diving ever since.

I understand the challenges because I have lived them

My journey has not been a straight line. I have experienced the highs of progress and the frustrations of feeling stuck.

I know what it feels like to:

  • Struggle to equalize and wonder why it does not work

  • Feel confused by mouthfill and how to use it correctly

  • Reach a depth plateau and feel unable to move beyond it

  • Push too hard, make mistakes, and learn difficult lessons

  • Experience ear barotrauma after diving while sick and forcing an inconsistent equalization

Those experiences have made me a more patient, safety-conscious instructor. I believe progress in freediving should never come from forcing the body. It comes from understanding your technique, listening to your body, training consistently, and respecting the process.

More than depth

While I train as a competitive athlete and work towards my personal depth goals, I still love the simple joy of exploring new dive sites, having fun underwater, and sharing the ocean with others.
And one day, I will swim with humpback whales in my long fins.

My approach to teaching

Whether you are completely new to freediving, working through equalization challenges, or looking to develop your depth and confidence, I will meet you where you are.

My teaching combines technical knowledge with empathy, patience, and a strong focus on safety. There is no need to rush, prove anything, or compare your journey to anyone else’s. We build skills step by step, at a pace that supports both confidence and enjoyment.

“Freediving is not about fighting the water or forcing depth. It is about learning to relax, listen, and discover what becomes possible when your body and mind work together.”
